Clinical trials are the backbone of medical advancement and have the potential to revolutionize medicine. By revealing treatment solutions unascertainable otherwise, this discovery process is essential to developing life-saving treatments and improving the quality of care for all patients. Without it, we would not be able to improve treatments or find cures for diseases.

Unfortunately, clinical research is often met with skepticism and misunderstanding by the public.

This article aims to educate the community about wellness and spread the word about medical trials to communities needing support. We believe in the value and reliability of clinical research, and we are enthusiastic about the differences these advancements can make for society.

The History of Medical Trials

James Lind, a Scottish physician, conducted the first modern clinical trial in 1747. Lind wanted to test the theory that citrus fruits could cure scurvy. He divided 12 patients with scurvy into six groups and gave each group different treatments.

After six days, Lind observed that the patients given citrus felt better than the other groups. He concluded that citrus fruits could cure scurvy, and a medical journal published his findings. While Lind's trial was small and didn't meet all the modern standards of clinical research, it was an essential first step in developing this field.

Clinical trials have come a long way since then, but there are still misunderstandings about what they are, how they work, and a barrier of medical mistrust in the African American population. To overcome this justifiable uncertainty, it is crucial to emphasize the importance of clinical trials as the only way to test the safety and efficacy of new treatments. Without them, we would not have many life-saving medicines we utilize today.

The Benefits of Clinical Research

A clinical trial is a medical research study where people participate or volunteer to test new treatments or interventions for various conditions. These treatments could be drugs, medical devices, or lifestyle changes.

When other treatments have failed, clinical trials can offer hope for a cure. For people without insurance or who cannot afford treatment, clinical trials can deliver access to new therapies and steady physician care that would otherwise be unavailable. In addition, medical trial researchers acquire invaluable knowledge and develop new ways to prevent and treat diseases.

Helping Communities

We believe the quality and integrity of clinical research are imperative to the progression of medicine.

The negative impact medical trials have had in historically under-represented communities cannot be understated. Minority groups, including the black and hispanic ethnicities, have been exploited by researchers in the past. In poverty-stricken populations, or those with negative opinions about medical trials, support and visibility are needed to raise awareness about the benefits of clinical research.

Through education and partnership, we can strive to build trust and create a better understanding of clinical research. We hope to partner with nonprofits, local healthcare providers and companies that can help us spread the word.
